Halloween by the Numbers

It’s a chance to dress up, decorate the house, eat candy and go to a party. More than 157 million Americans are planning to celebrate Halloween this year, making it the second-biggest retail holiday after Christmas. In its annual survey of Halloween spending, the National Retail Federation estimates that consumers will spend $6.9 billion in 2015.

  • 68 million Americans will dress up this Halloween. They will spend the most on adult costumes ($1.2 billion), and will spend $950 million on children’s costumes
  • 20 million pet owners will dress up their pet. They will spend $350 million on pet costumes
  • 93.7 percent of Halloween shoppers will buy candy, spending a total of $2.1 billion.
  • 33.5 percent will buy greeting cards, spending a total of $330 million
  • 44.8 percent of people plan to decorate their home or yard; 41 percent of are planning to carve pumpkins
  • 67.8 percent of consumers say they will hand out candy.
  • 31.5 percent plan to throw or attend a party with friends and family
